A science fair project challenges a student to solve a question using the scientific method. It is a great way to excite children about science, teach them to think like a scientist, develop their organization skills, and enhance their written and oral presentation skills.
This project is to be completed at home. We hope that parents will offer their child support and encouragement and monitor his or her progress in the coming weeks. At the same time, we ask parents to keep in mind that this project is the student's responsibility. By limiting parental involvement, the student will receive the full educational benefits of the science fair project. It should be noted that a successful project does not need to cost a lot of money. Some of the best projects can be completed by creatively using materials found around the home.

You will need:
- a science notebook (spiral, composition journal, or bradded folder with paper),
- a display board - not to exceed 15" deep, 48" wide, and 72" tall (sturdy trifold boards are usually found at local craft and office supply stores),
- any other materials required for the experiment that the student designs,
- print outs of photos that help document what was done during the experiment.
Note: Not all teachers and/or grade levels require this assignment. If you are not sure if you have to complete this project, ask your teacher. All students Kindergarten through 5th grade are welcome to complete a science project and share it with their class at Kiker, but only Kiker students in 3rd - 5th grade will have a chance to be selected to advance to the Austin Energy Regional Science Festival (based on their requirements).
